The Vanasthalipuram police in Hyderabad arrested a 37-year-old woman on Sunday, on charges of cheating, after she lodged a complaint of dowry harassment against her third husband. The woman, identified as C Saritha, had recently complained against her husband, alleging that she was harassed for dowry.

Her husband, identified as Rao, was arrested by the police on July 31 and later obtained bail. Following this, he conducted a background check on her, and found out that she had done the same thing, once in 2005 and in 2011, according to reports

“He had unearthed the certificates of her earlier marriages and the FIR copies of the cases. After verifying the evidence, it was revealed that Saritha had married twice in the past,” said M. Venkateswar Rao, DCP LB Nagar,

The DC report adds that Saritha was a homeopathic doctor, who practiced for a short period, before quitting the profession.

According to media reports, the woman had married a man from Karnataka in 2005, and filed a dowry harassment case against him in 2007. She compromised after collecting Rs 6 lakh in cash and 20 tolas of gold.

She married again in 2011, and followed the same process, before she got a divorce from him, and collected Rs 9 lakh.

Stating that this was the first fake dowry case in the jurisdiction of the Rachakonda Police, Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat told media persons, "Apart from the victim, another person also approached the police to lodge a complaint against her. In such cases, it is hard to find evidence against the culprit. In this case, police managed to find enough evidence (FIRs and marriage certificates). Otherwise, such cases are tricky."

Meanwhile, Saritha was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody
